Ronnie Williams started this petition to council City of Portsmouth

Graffiti has had a bad reputation for decades- and for good reason. Vandalism is not acceptable by any means. However, the art work shown by many street artists is incredible. It’s truly art. Not all, but a lot.

While graffiti is still illegal across the US, graffiti has taken a legal turn in some European countries such as Germany and the Czech Republic. Their street art and graffiti community is flourishing with amazing art pieces all across their cities. It has also impacted the illegal writers as well. Bringing illegal art activity down considerably.

I am not asking for graffiti to be legalized as a whole, but a designated area for writers, such as myself, to be able to do our art without the illegal aspect. Or the possibility of jail time.

Also, Portsmouth has quite a large art community thriving inside it. This wall is an opportunity to broaden different types of art practiced here in this great small town. I also believe that the youths could benefit from this too, artistically. I truly believe this could brighten up our town even more with a few exceptions. And should I mention that Portsmouth has already gotten a taste of street art? Yes, I am talking about the flood wall murals. Just another form of street art.

At this wall, we are free to come and go as we please and paint peacefully. All the while offering our town a unique artistic experience.

i will also consider having a set of rules to go along with this idea. Such as cleaning up after yourself, no offensive imagery or profanity.

I would even appoint myself to be a groundskeeper of a sort. Picking up any excess litter or washing away layers of paint to renew the painting surface.

This wall can also be a money making opportunity for the city and/or charities. Doing art events where we can invite and feature professional street artists to come and do a live painting side by side.

And with the Portsmouth Skatepark Project, we could collaborate on an event to offer music, art, food, competitions and so much more. “Skate&Paint” maybe? The possibilities are endless.
