A moratorium on construction/operations of biomass incinerators/boilers

The Issue

Burning wood – “biomass”-- to generate electricity is not clean, green or sustainable.

It releases more particulates and twice the CO2 as burning coal, per unit of power produced.

Current regulations don’t address particulates that increase asthma, bronchitis, heart disease and the risks of premature death.

Nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, sulfur dioxide, dioxins, arsenic, mercury and other burning by-products add more health risks.

Opposed by the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, American Academy of Pediatrics and more than 70,000 physicians across the country.

Healthy forests cleanse the air, provide wildlife habitat, absorb rainfall and store carbon, while supporting local jobs and enhancing the beauty of our surroundings.

A 50-megawatt incinerator burns more than a ton of trees a minute. No one knows the impact of removing massive amounts of biomass from forest ecosystems.

Nippon’s proposed incinerator would release pollution equivalent to 10,000 woodstoves burning 24/7, year round and use more water than all Port Angeles water customers inside and outside the city.
