Yesterday was really interesting as I had several events scheduled involving the course. Ironically, I don't know if I made any progress related to the Course, but I had an amazing experience with the people I encountered along the way.
It started by meeting Dede Devine, CEO of Native Connections, late yesterday afternoon. They currently operate Phoenix Indian School Visitor Center at the Park. I had no agenda other than to gain some understanding of their role and vision for the Park as well as answer any questions about our proposal. I got way more than I bargained for in this meeting.
Dede is one of the coolest people you'll ever meet. After asking me what I knew about the Park, I proudly recited the few tidbits I had read in the Master Plan. It took about 3 seconds for me to feel stupid, no fault of Dede's btw. She couldn't have been more kind and respectful when we she told me the fascinating history of the park going well beyond 1990's Master Plan.
I won't tell the story because it's not mine to tell but I will share one neat tidbit she explained to me related to the Course. She said that she would love to see more people using the Park in the areas of music and sport. She then explained that the children at the Indian School were from many tribes and spoke many languages making communication difficult. For that reason, it was music and sport that allowed the students to bond and communicate.
We talked about Native Connections and the projects it supports. They are involved in some amazing projects helping the homeless, various addictions, low-income and the under-served. I had no idea nor did I realize how innovative and forward-thinking the organization was.
I met with Dede hoping to get her backing for the Course but I left with something much more valuable regardless of what happens with the Course. If you aren't familiar with Native Connections, Phoenix Indian School Visitor Center, or DeDe Devine, I'd suggest that you read upon on both. The Center will be open to the public during the 4th of July festivities so be sure to check it out.
That wasn't the only cool part of my day either. I just don't have time to write about attending the Parks & Rec Board Meeting last evening. I'll update that as soon as I get a chance.
