Replace Phila. City Hall Penn Statue with Anti-Slavery Quaker Benjamin Lay

Replace Phila. City Hall Penn Statue with Anti-Slavery Quaker Benjamin Lay

The Issue

Benjamin Lay was essential in creating the Abolitionist Movement that ended slavery. By antagonizing and questioning slavery-supporting Quakers like William Penn, he pushed the sect to become one of the earliest and most important voices calling for abolition. As Penn had 12 slaves, paved the way for the extermination of our indigenous peoples, and was little more than a corporate sponsor for the Pennsylvania colony, his statue atop City Hall should be replaced by one of Lay.
