Hi, I’m Marc Aubin and I ask you: Does your vision of Canada include the past? Here’s your opportunity to save the last grand house on Canada’s main street. Join the Main Streets Movement!

The 150th anniversary of Canada is in 2017. The last Confederation-era mansion on Rideau Street in Ottawa is threatened with demolition. Rideau Street is the oldest main street in the City of Ottawa, Canada’s capital. Let’s leave a legacy for 2017. Let’s save the Stewart-Dworkin house at 256 Rideau Street.

Colonel John Stewart, an Irish immigrant and carpenter, built the Stewart-Dworkin house in 1877. He fought in the Fenian raids (1866-1870). He also became a nationally-recognized contractor with work on the original Supreme Court; the West Block of the Parliament buildings in Ottawa; a commission for the RCMP in Regina; armories in Toronto; and many other projects. He died in 1894 and is buried at the Beechwood National Cemetery of Canada.

Abraham and Rose Dworkin, Jewish Lithuanian immigrants, moved into the house around 1921. They turned it into one of Ottawa’s most successful fur businesses – Dworkin Furs. Mr. Dworkin became a leading philanthropist and business figure. After 111 years in business, Dworkin Furs closed in 2012.

The house at 256 Rideau Street is an important reminder of Ottawa and Canada’s early builders. It is also one of the few buildings left on Canada’s main street that is witness to the important presence of the Jewish community in Ottawa and Rideau Street’s commercial history.

Let’s work together to save and rebuild our main streets. Join the Main Street’s Movement!

Note: Marc Aubin is a fifth generation resident of Ottawa and has been active in his community since 1998. After over 30 hours of research, Aubin was able to track down this old photograph of the Stewart-Dworkin house to original descendants of the Stewart family in San Diego, California.
