Keep the Promise: Let Us Improve Coconut Grove's "Big Hill Park"

The Issue

Two years ago the Miami Foundation pledged $22,500 to help the City of Miami improve conditions at Big Hill Park -- a small, publicly owned, waterfront access point at the end of Coconut Grove's Royal Rd. For generations local residents of all ages have visited the site to fish, picnic and enjoy the views of Biscayne Bay. But now, the City of Miami won't allow us to spend our own money on a simple plan to clean it up, plant a few shade trees and install benches and other low-impact improvements. Why are they stonewalling? Nearby neighbors say the improvements will attract unwanted and undesirable visitors to the park, and they lobbied city officials to derail the plans. Now, city leaders and administrative staff won't even speak about our plans or our funding. But the clock is ticking -- on June 30 the grant money expires, along with our dream of improving this important part of our community’s heritage. We need your help in asking the City of Miami  -- at no cost to taxpayers -- to follow through on its promise, allowing us to make Big Hill Park a cleaner, safer, more enjoyable space for all of us. Please sign our petition and pass it on. To learn more, read this news report:
