Our goal is to create policy that will form oversight commissions in Southern California.

The Issue

WHY IS OPERATION UNITY NEEDED?

OPERATION UNITY is a collective response from clergy to advocate for progress in reforming our communities and law enforcement. As we are aware, the climate amongst our communities surrounding our churches concerning law enforcement has become quite tense to say the least. The climate is ripe for change and it is imperative that clergy position themselves at the helm.

WHAT IS OUR ASK?

The conversation with the participating elected officials will concern creating and enforcing policy that will form oversight commissions within their individual cities. If an oversight commission already exists, we will request for the commission to be granted subpoena power, investigative power, and sanctioning power. This commitment will allow for safe, progressive, and accountable relationships between the community and law enforcement.

We are aware that nothing of this magnitude will happen overnight, but our purpose for meeting is to ask for local government in the Greater Los Angeles area to pledge to continuously engage this effort until this request is put into practice. We are asking for a written commitment through our “Declaration of Interdependence Toward a Commitment of Engagement”.

WHEN WILL OPERATION UNITY OCCUR?
We will caravan to each stop:
Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 8:00am – 2:00pm
The tentative schedule of stops are:
Long Beach City Hall 8:00am
Compton City Hall 9:30am
Inglewood City Hall 11:00am
East LA Board of Supervisors Office 12:30pm
Downtown LA City Hall 2:00pm

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

Our strategy is simple. We will gather at the steps of each city’s City Hall and lead a peaceful prayer and song service for the city, its leaders, and its citizens. Simultaneously, the leading committee will meet with the city officials to discuss and sign the Declaration of Interdependence. After the joint statement is signed, the clergy leaders will close the meeting, and join the praying crowd to show the signed commitment and to publicly pray for the leaders. This will be the blueprint for every city.

We will be sure to follow all CDC guidelines, including wearing masks and remaining socially distanced.
