A name is very important for our identity. For example: As parents, & owners of anything that we love, we take our time coming up with the perfect name that will represent our babies the best way possible. We hope that the names that we give to our children will help lead them into success, into a great honorable reflection of ourselves and of them. A name is very meaningful.

That is  why we are here today fighting to change the name that have been given to our people of LA whom are struggling. The people of skid row. When I think of the name “skid”,  I think of the skid marks of poop. It’s very negative and demeaning. Just think about it, a skid mark is everlasting, you try to wash it out, until later you realize, you have to throw your favorite pair of clothing away because the stain won’t come out. Is this a metaphoric idea of how we feel about our people? If so, This is not ok. This could be causing more damage, a psychological hinderance.

So, what steps could we start making to help those in need to not feel hopeless? A brand new start, a brand new identity. To associate our people in need with hope and chance, not with scum or an endpoint. change its name to something that will be motivating, inspiring, and also welcoming all to come and help those in need. We want those who are in need to not feel less than, by being associated with a name of such disgust. We would like to change the name to  Opportunity Row.

We believe that this name can give those in need a different perspective of their circumstances. Let them know and feel that this is not a dead end, but an opportunity to get help, and be better than ever before. And those who are fortunate to give, be even more motivated to provide that opportunity to those whom are less fortunate. And not feel that they are wasting their time on people who can’t change, or be better (that’s what the name gives off, like a skid mark)  I no longer want a name so inhumane to be associated with our humans, our people,  Our brothers and sisters. They deserve the respect and the dignity of a name that will help them through and give them hope.  Not one that make their self-reflection be so small and unworthy. So please help us change the name, the future outlook for our people.
