Help Kirkland BLM Mural Find New Home
The Issue
The story: (edited as of Monday) With permission from Kirkland Sur La Table,(SLT) members of the community painted a Black Lives Matter mural in downtown Kirkland on SLT property. During the process of painting, the community members were approached by the manager of a nearby Jimmy John’s. The manager was told to take pictures and videos of what was happening and report to the building owner of SLT. Instead, she repeatedly harassed the mural painters and decided to involve the cops. When the Kirkland police arrived, the community members were given permission to continue painting the mural. Just because the manager was asked to take photos and videos of “vandalism” taking place, does not excuse her harassment of the mural painters. Once the property manager notified SLT management and both SLT locations were aware of what was being painted, management was in agreement with the mural and the fact it should stay.
With the petition we want to accomplish two goals
Our First Goal:
1. Allow the artwork to stay as long as the plywood does. Mission accomplished!!
Our Second Goal:
2. Find the mural an new home. The plywood will soon be coming down, which means the mural would love a new home. With the help of property management, the mural will be salvaged and safely returned to the sign painters. Thank you to all who have signed the petition and helped make this happen. If you are a Kirkland business owner who would like to display the mural, please contact us!
Thankyou. More information can be found on the Instagram account @eastside.activist
