Every year hundreds of thousands of car accidents stem from distracted driving.
The Issue
On August 5, 2016 my family was involved in a horrific head on collision on Eldorado Parkway in Frisco, Texas. An automobile driving eastbound crossed the median and hit my car head on at 50mph. Due to the abrupt impact, the other car then rotated and hit the side of my car. My 5 year old and 20 month old girls were in the car at the time. After having Frisco Samaritans pull my children out from the wreckage, we were then taken to Plano Presbyterian Trauma Center. By what I can only explain as God’s Grace, we walked away from this horrifying accident with a lung contusion, broken sternum, internal bruising and a few fractured bones; however the post-traumatic stress has altered our lives forever
The reason I am writing this letter is due to the fact that the perpetrator of this accident openly admitted to being distracted while operating a vehicle, however, was not cited and I find this unacceptable.
Not only are there multiple eye witnesses and the driver's own confession to being at fault but there is additional evidence e.g. tire marks showing the direction of her vehicle and how it failed to maintain its lane and the simple fact that both cars ended up on the East Bound direction of Eldorado.
Every year hundreds of thousands of car accidents stem from distracted driving, leading to nine fatalities a day, according to figures on the US Department of Transportation website Distraction.gov.
Surrounding areas such as Little Elm and Denton have laws which make it illegal for drivers to call, read or write texts, take pictures, use apps, engage in gaming or visit websites, or even just hold the device, while driving. Why does our city of Frisco not protect its citizens and require such laws?
Frisco prohibits driving while intoxicated. These laws do not prevent it from occurring however they come with consequences when broken. The same should transpire to drivers who are distracted!!
Distracted driving endangers not only the driver but everyone in their vicinity. In 2013, 424,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. One in five crashes in which someone was injured involved distracted driving. It’s time Frisco take action on something that is proven to be extremely dangerous to not only the perpetrator but only the innocent victims who are also on the roads.
Help us make this change.
