Reform or change the street cleaning and/or parking situation in Daly City.

The Issue

In certain areas of Daly City, for example Southeast of Mission St., the city performs street cleaning on a weekly basis. As much as I appreciate wanting to keep neighborhoods clean, and give the street cleaners opportunities for work, this is superfluous and unnecessary. Two days a week, people are forced to move their cars (in my area as early as 6AM) or risk facing a ticket worth upwards of $30. Not only that, but people are so desperate that they often park in crosswalks (which is dangerous, especially for handicapped people), on sidewalks not wide enough for cars and people, or on other people's property. I can't count the number of hours I've spent driving up and down blocks looking for a space, many times up to a mile or two away from my house, with no luck. I dread doing anything on street cleaning nights, for fear of coming home late and knowing I won't be able to find parking anywhere. Not only is it dangerous for people to be driving around for so long so late at night, but it is causing excessive gas consumption. I have tried leaving work early, but even by 4PM there are droves of people driving around trying to find places to park. I have even gotten up at 5:30AM to move my car before street cleaning begins, hoping that I would luck out and find a spot, but that rarely works. There are other parts of the city, like Sunset, where they do street cleaning a couple times PER MONTH, and the streets look just as clean, if not cleaner, than Daly City. Their cleaning times are also much more reasonable, like 9AM when many people have already taken their cars to work.

The sidewalks in my neighborhood are disgusting, as if no one has swept them in years. Perhaps instead of cleaning the streets so often, they could focus their attention on the walkways. As I said before, I know these street cleaners are just doing their job, but their jobs could be reformed to better benefit our community.

As if this wasn't enough, the parking situation in Daly City is terrible. Unclear signs that contradict one another, having two different cleaning days on the same cul-de-sac, and in the minimal space we DO have to park, there are numerous areas for only Daly City PD to park, or curbs that aren't big enough to fit a car. I beg the city to do something about this problem, and I hope I'm not alone in my frustration with this situation. I think it would be best to street clean less often, and do it during times that wouldn't negatively impact residents as they are now. Also, having more attention paid to walkways would be great, although given how many people park on the sidewalk, this may be an issue.
