Parents Against Wawa Gas Station at G. W. Carver Elementary School Coral Gables, FL.

Parents Against Wawa Gas Station at G. W. Carver Elementary School Coral Gables, FL.
The Issue
The construction of a WAWA gas station and convenience store will increase already traffic congestion for Parent Drop Off / Pick Up at the school Grand Ave. & US 1 and expose gas emission pollution in possible violation of EPA recommendations against the building of gas stations within 1,000 feet of schools. Also, Gas stations and convenience stores especially ones that sell beer and wine like the WAWA will are also magnets for violent crime and the location for nearly 10% of all robberies nationwide, according to 2019 FBI data (https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/tables/table-23
The Principal nor District 6 School Board member was informed of the plans until after decisions were taken and the appeals period was over. The City’s unique settlement agreement with the developer precluded a public hearing regarding the land’s use. Failure to notify the school that has been in the community for over a century and is located less than 1000 feet from the proposed project is an inadmissible error. We urge the City of Coral Gables Commissioners, the Miami Dade County School Board and the Miami Dade Board of County Commissioners to take action to prevent the project from moving forward and find a "suitable replacement project.”
