Safety Measures on Summit St - 5th Ave Intersection (Italian Village, Columbus, OH)

The Issue

Problem: The intersection of Summit Street and 5th Avenue in Italian Village, Columbus, Ohio has an extremely high accident rate for the following reasons:

  • Construction has closed off the right-hand lane heading westbound, west of Summit Street, on 5th Avenue
  • The left-hand land heading westbound on 5th Avenue becomes left-turn only at Summit, as the two lanes become one due to the construction
  • There is insufficient signage and street markings, so drivers do not realize that the lane becomes left-turn only
  • Drivers continue going straight, realize they do not have a lane to drive in, and cause drivers to swerve to avoid head-on collision, resulting in accidents
  • These accidents put all parties at risk including all drivers on the road, pedestrians on the street, construction workers, Zaftig patrons and residents in the Beeker and future building on the northwest side of the intersection

Examples:

Crashes at this intersection happen weekly, if not daily, with 3+ accidents occurring during the weekend of 4/23-4/25.

  1. October 24, 2020 - Car Crashed into Zaftig and if the car would've hit differently, it could've caused the corner of the building and the apartments above to collapse
  2. April 25, 2021 - Car ran into the southwest corner of Summit and 5th, narrowly avoiding the Zaftig patio on Summit.  Inside the car, an infant was injured.

Potential Solutions:

  1. Increased demarcation on streetlight and / or road warning the left lane becomes left-turn only to prevent accidents
  2. Increased barricades on the northwest and southwest corners of the intersection to protect pedestrians and building residents from potential collision
