Honor the Lives Lost at "The Hanging Tree" on Ashley Ave

The Issue

The "Hanging Tree" is located on Ashley Avenue in historic downtown Charleston, SC.  It is the infamous location of Denmark Vesey's public execution in 1822 and served as a lynching tree.  The city of Charleston not only paved the streets and homes around this tree, but also replanted another tree after the original was uprooted in Hugo.  Despite it's infamous history, there is NO plaque, monument, or signage that acknowledges its sinister role in racial injustice.

Overnight, the tree was adorned with the "Strange Fruit 2020" sign and strips of fabric listing names of black victims.  The Charleston police removed all evidence of this before noon.

Please sign this petition for a PROPER memorial to the lives lost at this depraved landmark.
