Lock Up for Safety: Make Medicine Safes Standard in California Homes

We are calling on the State of California to update its Building Code to require a mountable medicine safe in every newly built home. This simple measure could protect children, prevent misuse, and save lives. It all starts at home.

Every year, families lose loved ones to preventable overdoses and drug-related accidents; tragedies that could be avoided with one simple solution: safe, secure medication storage.

From 2017 to 2021, preventable drug-related overdose deaths in California doubled. (California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation; California Health Policy Strategies)
Children, in particular, are at risk of accidental overdose when medications or drugs are not locked up and stored out of reach, research shows that for children under 5, 82% of prescription drug ingestion incidents occur at home.

The Saving Lives Camarillo Coalition has already distributed over 500 free medicine lockboxes to Camarillo households free of charge; including families with children and grandparents with visiting grandchildren!

By helping residents secure their medications, we reduce the risk of accidental ingestion, curiosity-driven experimentation, and prescription drug misuse; right at the original source: the home.

But Saving Lives Camarillo can’t do it alone.
By signing this petition, you can help make drug safety a standard in every California home; for our children, our families, and our future.
