Homelessness is a prevalent issue within the Peel Region. I have personally noticed numerous individuals in my community battling homlessness and struggling to find a safe place to live. A survey conducted in Peel in 2018 recognized that while 90% of this population receives some form of income they are still homeless due to high rent costs and low vacancy rates. In the past few years there has been an increase in population but the lack of housing to accommodate it has resulted in a spike in homlessness. According to a study conducted in Peel in 2018, most homeless people said that they want safe housing and shorter wait times for affordable housing units . Currently, Peel has 17, 508 affordable housing units and 14, 997 people on the waitlist. In reality this number is probably much higher. The Peel region has invested $335 million in affordable housing units and the federal government has invested $276.4 million. However, despite sufficient funds to build affordable housing units the wait times to gain access to them are ridiculously high ranging anywhere from 1.5-12 years.

In order to address the homlessnes and affordable housing crisis in Peel more social housing units need to be built in a short amount of time. A reasonable and effective solution is modular housing. Modular houses are built in factories and parts are then transported to the building site for installation. The construction time for these houses is up to 50% less than regular housing. Furthermore, they are cheaper to build and also more energy efficient which helps save money in the long run. Overall, building modular housing can help resolve the issue of long wait times and help Peel residents who are homeless obtain affordable housing units in a reasonable amount of time. By partnering with non-profit organizations the government can help provide affordable housing to families and individuals that need it in a timely manner.
