Reopen Bell Gardens Skatepark

The Issue

Bell Gardens (BG) Skatepark has been kept dear & has been a second home to the skateboard community since its completion in the early 2000's. Throughout the years, the community within the skatepark grows bigger & bigger, not only do skateboarders from BG enjoy it, but skateboarders from all around southern California come to enjoy the fruits of our little skatepark.

When BG skateboarders try to skate around in the streets, they are easily kicked out by cops, security or property owners & get shunned for doing so, but where are we to skate, if our skatepark remains closed? The BG skateboard community grows tired & restless, awaiting the reopening, while the skatepark remains closed indefinitely during the pandemic because of safety & health restrictions, yet the Bicycle Casino is open for outdoor gambling. Seems rather unfair.

While beaches & many parks have reopened with restrictions, our skatepark remains closed. Governor Gavin Newsom recognizes that Californians should venture outside for some exercise, which is backed by county health departments. Rather than wasting resources on an unreasonable closure of our park, fewer resources could be spent breaking up groups failing to social distance.

Why should BG Skatepark reopen?

  • Per LA County Department of Parks & Recreation: all parks remain under normal operating hours
  • It is safer than skateboarding in the streets
  • Gives kids a recreational option, after spending all day at home
  • It is a waste of taxpayer money, kept closed
  • Citizens of the United States should not be prevented use of their public park(s)

Below are two links stating all Los Angeles parks are open under normal operational hours:

Points as to why City of Bell Gardens is unjust concerning reopening of the skatepark:

  • Most amenities that fall under the Department of Parks & Recreation have remained opened
  • Restaurants are open for outdoor dining
  • Bicycle Casino is open for outdoor gambling
  • Major department stores like Ross & Marshalls remain open
