Intersection Modification at Bath Road and Morley Drive, Morley WA

Intersection Modification at Bath Road and Morley Drive, Morley WA

The Issue

The intersection where Morley Drive meets Bath Road is causing concern for local residents.

Not only is it a dangerous intersection to be able to cross as a pedestrian and in/on a motor vehicle due to the volume of traffic (now experienced as a result of the nearby Tonkin entry/exit/roundabout on Morley Drive in both directions) but it it is causing gridlock in and around the area during peak traffic hours.

Exiting Bath Road is already precarious with the line of sight being obstructed to the left due to the bend in the road, the high fence line and over grown trees on the central reservation. The central meridian is narrow so cars can and do overhang into the road itself. There is also the the speed risk factor at 70km, causing crossing this intersection to be dangerous and impracticable.

This is an intersection on a main public transportation route and so gridlock also occurs when buses are unable to cross the intersection onto Bath Road with traffic from the opposite flow of preventing them to do so safely, forcing them to sit and overhang the middle meridian and causing traffic tail back in the right lane whilst waiting to cross, causing abrupt breaking and swerving from motor vehicle travelling 70kms towards the Tonkin entry slip road.

The next intersection along is where Crimea meets Morley Drive and this is managed adequately with Traffic Lights and the other side of the roundabout towards Kiara is also managed with Traffic Lights to reduce traffic build up and issues.

Since the completion of the Tonkin Highway access there has been little to no monitoring of the increased traffic as a result of this upgrade and the effect is it having on the local traffic despite the admission of local government recognising it as a potential black spot and issues its causing.

Bath Road is not only a used as part of a public transport route, this is also a road that leads people to the Galleria, a nearby Church and two nearby Primary School - so safe and practical traffic management should be a priority.

There needs to be consideration to improve the traffic management and decrease potential for accident.

By upgrading the intersection from a stop sign to a roundabout will slow motor vehicles on approach, allowing pedestrians to safely cross the intersection at the designated crossing points and enable motor vehicles to be able to safely enter and exit Bath Road onto Morley Drive in both directions due to safe and adequate traffic management, eliminating unnecessary traffic build up during peak hours and unnecessary hesitation on this junction; reducing the risk of it becoming an accident hot spot.
