Show Support for Austin to Become a Bee-City

The Issue

Bees are one of, if not the most, valuable resources to the ecological system. 1 in every 3 bites of food we eat is courtesy of insect pollination, and 90% of all wild plants and trees rely on pollinators. Bees are extremely efficient pollinators and it is imperative to protect them.

Bee populations all over the world are declining at a stunning rate. In the U.S alone honeybees are declining at 44% annually. This is due to a number of reasons, including the increase of mono-crops, loss of habitat, parasites, pathogens and a variety of pesticides.

Bee Cities are certified cities that commit to creating sustainable habitats for pollinators. By becoming a Bee City, the City of Austin would join the 90 other current Bee Cities in taking a stand to protect and ensure the vitality of the bee. Being a Bee City includes providing pollinator habitats and raising awareness through education and outreach. Through the creation of a Bee City Task Force, the City of Austin will be held accountable for pollinator conservation. Below are a list of benefits to the City of Austin becoming a Bee City.

Benefits Include:

  • Ensure survival of vital animal species
  • Improve local food production
  • Stimulate local plant nursery
  • Engage community in removing invasives
  • Address pest problem less toxically
  • Heighten awareness of seasonal changes
  • Increase small business opportunities
