Help Remove Breed Restrictions in Apartments (Austin, TX)
The Issue
Where I live, my apartment complex, there is a diversity of dogs, including Pit Bull Terriers, German Shepherds, and Siberian Huskies. Because of this, I brought my Doberman puppy to live with me. For several months my puppy and I lived happily in our home, people loved him because he is a friendly happy dog.
I will not lie, there are those people who still believe in the popular belief that all Dobermans are evil. They would whisper to each other, "Is that a Doberman?" and we'd both ignore it. (Usually by then they'd calmed down because he showed no hostility towards them; eventually they would befriend him--when they'd see him again).
Until I was told that he wasn't allowed in the apartments by the leasing manager. Honestly, I pointed out several facts, including that there were other "aggressive breeds" living here, and although I knew it was selective application of restrictions, I complied.
Instead of being spiteful, and condemning my neighbor's dogs, I want to help remove breed restrictions. In my opinion no dog is born with aggressive genes, that is something upbringing brings out.
Don't worry, my pup, Jax, is coming home. I struggle with anxiety I went through the process of registering him as an Emotional Support Animal. In the meantime, I do not want anyone else to have to send their dogs away, no one deserves that. Especially when it's a well mannered "aggressive dog".
