Support the right to have hens in our urban backyard in Winnipeg

The Issue

In this time of the Coronavirus we should allow citizens the right to keep chickens in their backyard with some restrictions. These rules could include limiting the number of hens to 6 per property, prohibiting the sale of eggs and requiring the chickens to be contained in safe, well aerated spaces.
Chickens are a sustainable pet that can teach your children how to care for animals. There are many nutritional benefits to having chickens as well such as providing families with accessible organic eggs at this time when access to some basic food items may be limited. Home harvested eggs are more nutritious and will promote healthy eating. Other benefits to having these pets include providing stress relief and distraction for people who may be feeling “cooped up” during this period of self-isolation.
