We call for the immediate removal & replacement of our shelter's supervisor and demand that the City of Wylie Animal Services operate as an official No Kill shelter.
The Issue
A couple of years ago a small group of animal activists began to advocate for a better shelter for the animals in Wylie, TX. We researched better programs and rallied city council meetings, animal advisory board meetings and social media for change.
The city pushed back with their typical "change takes time" response and only a little progress has been made. During this time (and continuing until today), shelter stats showed that cats were being killed on the same day they arrived; a violation of city ordinances. And there was no rhyme or reason behind what animals the supervisor deemed worthy of life or death.
Just recently a neutered, stray, Rhodesian Ridgeback dog named Buddy, was brought in to the shelter by a Good Samaritan. While efforts were made by volunteers at the shelter to find a rescue group and foster for Buddy, the supervisor decided to kill him claiming he was "depressed and not socializing well". The shelter was NOT full and space was not an issue in the decision. He had only been at the shelter for 2.5 months.
Buddy was not aggressive or sick, and since he was already neutered, it was a good chance that he belonged to someone. The supervisor gave no notice to the volunteers that worked tirelessly to set up Buddy's salvation out of the shelter, when they killed him, even though they knew that a rescue and foster had been secured.
Buddy's death should not be in vain. The citizens of Wylie want more from our tax funded shelter. Our community animals deserve more.
By signing this petition you are adding your voice to ours, so we can speak as one collective force to tell our ELECTED city council members that we are TIRED of the way our shelter is being run. Please join us in standing up for what is right and adding Wylie, TX to the growing number of shelters across this nation that are CHOOSING to dismantle status quo and embrace the No Kill Equation. By taking a common sense approach to sheltering, with the abundance of programs already successful in other cities, large and small, we hope to add Wylie, TX to the No Kill shelter list and reach a 90% or higher save rate.
