Prevent the placement of homeless cabins directly next to Garden Valley Elementary School.

The Issue

Sacramento City Council has proposed to place 50 homeless cabins right next to Garden Valley Elementary school. The proposed cabins will have no plumbing inside of them, with accessible restrooms only at a “community center” within the proposed site. Concentrating the homeless within a residential area will place an unfair burden on the surrounding neighborhood, causing many safety and financial concerns for the residents.  By placing the homeless shelters the city risks the safety of the residents of the surrounding neighborhood, as well as the children who go to the school that is DIRECTLY across the street from the proposed homeless shelters. Surrounding property values will drop drastically, hurting the residents financially. Homelessness is a major issue that should be shared throughout the city, it should not be placed as a burden on any specific neighborhood. The city is looking for the cheapest solution to homelessness (without considering the ramifications for those who live nearby), rather than looking for the optimal solution. We encourage the city to look for a better solution and refuse to accept the homeless cabins in our neighborhood.
