Built in 1964, the library is Moses Lake's most architecturally unique building and has served us well for many years, but it doesn't meet ADA requirements or the needs of modern technologies. In addition, while our population has grown significantly since 1964, the building has not. It is only 9,000 sq. ft. To meet current and future needs it should be nearly 30,000. This size deficiency, coupled with the lack of ADA access, has meant fewer books and other resources are available, and makes it necessary to hold events in the main area of the library, which is disruptive to other users.
While the library serves every demographic group within our community, regardless of age, economic, or any other status, for many it offers the only means by which they can access the internet, which is vital for everything from checking children's progress in school to applying for employment, and impacts so many other areas of modern life.
We ask that the City Council recognized the essential role the public library serves in our community and endorse the foundation's proposal to remodel and expand the facility so that it can continue to meet the needs of its users, now, and for many years to come.
