Change the name of our city from Fort Bragg, CA to who we are today
The Issue
Braxton Bragg was considered the "most hated man in the Confederacy", an extreme racist and a drunk. In addition he is sometimes considered the person most responsible for losing the war for the South. He lost most of the battles that he led his men into.
Why would we want to continue to show support for this poor excuse of a human being by retaining his name to identify our wonderful city? A company of soldiers was sent to the Mendocino Coast to build a fort in the 1850s to protect against the indigenous people who had lived here for hundreds of years. Lieutenant Bishop, the commanding officer of the company named the fort after his former Captain, Braxton Bragg, who never came within a thousand miles of our city. The Pomo tribes were a relatively peaceful group of people living off the bountiful land and were not inclined to war.
Within a year of completion of the fort it was dismantled because it was determined that there was no threat from the local residents, and one building remains and is the coastal office of our member of Congress, Jared Huffman, and our 4th District Supervisor, Dan Djerde.
We as a community together should choose a new name for our fair city. We should agree that Fort Bragg is not right for the 21st century.
