Get consent education in RPS

The Issue

As many victims have come forward about their sexual assaults, it has become clear that Rochester Public Schools and schools in the surrounding area, have failed to properly educate their students about the importance of consent. Sex education must be reformed drastically to change from one that emphasizes abstinence to one that emphasizes how to have healthy and consensual sex. Throughout the U.S., less than a third of people are taught anything at all related to consent in middle or high school. To fix this there should be extensive open discussions and additions to the curriculum regarding how to avoid perpetuating toxic masculinity, the pyramid of rape culture, and how to support current survivors. These are simple additions that can be added to a Health class curriculum and make a huge difference. Women especially aged 12-34 are at the highest risk for sexual assault, and highschoolers are included in this demographic. These changes will foster healthy sex habits that will stick with students as they go on to college where sexual assault and harassment are even more prevalent. High-schools need to do their part to prevent rape and support survivors. I wish I had been informed about this topic earlier in my life, and I know that I am not alone. The lack of genuine dialogue about sex is not only passive but harmful. The time for change is now, sexual assault and harassment is not normal and not something schools should overlook and tolerate.
