Preserve Montana Creek Access for Everyone!

The Issue

CBJ Parks & Rec is currently considering if it should close Montana Creek beyond the rifle range to motorized vehicles, in either the winter or YEAR ROUND - blocking access to 1,000 acres of State of Alaska (DNR) Land, the ONLY parcel within Juneau legal to create and ride trail on via ATV.  The Juneau Nordic Ski Club has requested this in order to have exclusive winter access of the existing road.  They intend to be exempt & able to operate their motorized vehicles for their purposes.

While we fully support the Juneau Nordic Ski Club in their activity, these exclusive rights should be obtained by permitting process or land purchase for construction of their own, dedicated trails, not by the seizure & repurpose of an access road at the expense and exclusion of other current and future users/groups.  There is room in the area for groups to develop for their own unique needs!

The Juneau Off-Road Association (JORA) has an inclusive, multiple group/use development plan for the area that will be heavily impacted by this potential action.  There is already Fish & Game permitting in progress and State of Alaska DOT approval was granted to JORA (8/6/20) to repair the failing bridge.

  • Do you want to see groups able to access the area and develop more diverse opportunities for Juneau?
  • Do you want riding trails?
  • Do you want near-to-home access?
  • Do you want to see an off-road vehicle (ORV) accessible campground; somewhere you can pack your gear and family and drive your ORV to?
  • Do you want to see backcountry (Spaulding Meadow) access to snow without worry about enough snow at the trail heads?
  • Do you want to harvest berries or mushrooms via ATV trail?
  • Do you want to hunt or trap by ATV?
  • Do you want to operate your own mining claim on DNR land?
