Free Jasmine, Again!
The Issue
They're at it again!
Demand the City of Pasadena’s Prosecutor Michele Bagneris drop the vandalism, trespassing, and recording/wiretapping charges against Black Lives Matter Pasadena founder Jasmine Richards Abdullah by adding your name to this petition Free Jasmine, Again! These most recent charges in 2020 directly violate her probation (from the lynching conviction) and put her at risk of being imprisoned again for her activism.
Jasmine Richards Abdullah was arrested by Pasadena Police Dept. (PPD) back in 2015 with a “felony lynching” charge when she led a youth protest against murder. The PPD targeted her with this penal code falsely claiming she was inciting a riot by defending someone from being arrested. The courts found her guilty, and she served time for the charge.
In July 2020, she was charged with vandalism and trespassing for boycotting the Fair Oaks Laundromat, which violated her probation under the lynching conviction. Jasmine and others had been painting messages of love and support to the community on the temporary wood boards placed by the racist owners of the laundromat while the business voluntarily shut down in response to a boycott she led. Then, officers handcuffed her on the sidewalk in front of the laundromat and forced her onto the property. Richards Abdullah was never served any letter or notification the owners did not want her on the property, yet she is now facing vandalism and trespassing charges from the City Prosecutor's office.
In October 2020, Jasmine learned she is being charged yet again in a pending case number, for a video recording of a conversation regarding justice for Anthony McClain with City Manager Steve Mermell, despite the fact that Jasmine did not record the video.
Since Jasmine began freedom fighting, the City of Pasadena has pressed over 16 charges against her.
Jasmine is going to court October 30th to face these most recent charges from boycotting the Fair Oaks Laundromat and standing up to demand justice for Anthony McClain.
Sign this petition to demand City Attorney/City Prosecutor Michele Bagneris drop the charges under case numbers 20-2221, 20-2251, and one pending. Stop the City of Pasadena from targeting activists in the struggle for Black liberation.
In lieu of donations to Change.org (which go to Change.org and not Black Lives Matter Pasadena), please call Michele Bagneris' office 626-744-4611 to demand they drop the charges for both Jasmine and Nafissa Kaba, whose change.org petition can be found here. Script to call Pasadena City Prosecutor Michele Bagneris's Office at 626-744-4611:
"I am calling to demand the City Attorney's Office of Michele Bagneris drop the charges for Jasmine Richards Abdullah under case numbers 20-221, 20-2251 and one pending case. I also demand her office drop the charge for Nafissa Kaba in case number 20-2503.
The City of Pasadena continues to target protestors who stand up for Black lives in Pasadena, particularly when questioning the authority of the police.
Further criminalizing Jasmine for her activism in the City of Pasadena is unacceptable and tarnishes the justice system of this City. I demand these charges be dropped as Jasmine's strength to stand up for the community in the face of racism should be praised and not vilified.
Jasmine is already on probation for a bogus lynching charge and conviction that came from this same office. These recent charges would violate her probation, and put her at risk of being incarcerated for her activism, again.
Drop the charges immediately."
