Keep Chantilly Lace as our school song

Keep Chantilly Lace as our school song

Yes, this is happening at Chantilly High School
Shared by Tammy Oliver Sankner whose daughter is in the CHS Band and this message sent by the Principal:
Concerns About Our Traditional Theme Song: Among our top goals for the 2021-2022 School Year, we want to send a message that all students are welcome and valued at CHS. We are committed to promoting a school culture puts inclusivity and treating each other with dignity among our top priorities. I have been made aware that some find our traditional theme song, Chantilly Lace, to be offensive and inconsistent with our school values. I recognize that this song is a Chantilly tradition that has been a part of our school culture for many years. Rather than make any abrupt decisions, I would like to spend some time listening to what others think about this matter and pose some questions for everyone to think about:
Do you know the lyrics to Chantilly Lace? YES
Do they cause you concern? NO
If so, what aspects of the song do you believe are problematic? THERE IS NOTHING PROBLEMATIC WITH THIS SONG
Could we possibly keep the melody to Chantilly Lace but change some of the lyrics? NO
If it is time to move completely away from Chantilly Lace as our traditional theme song, what should we replace it with? NO REPLACEMENT IS NECESSARY
I want maintain trust and respect with students, staff, and parents by including their voices in a dialogue about what some construe as an important CHS tradition. I think we can also use this opportunity to highlight that while traditions can play a productive role in determining school culture, they need to be examined and possibly changed if they are not consistent with our goals. In the coming weeks, I will be starting a dialogue with students, staff, and parents. If you are interested and would like to provide input, I will be working with the PTSA to include this discussion in an upcoming meeting. We will continue our practice of playing Chantilly Lace at football games until this matter is resolved.
