Chronic Pain Patients

The Issue

We, the undersigned, urge for a reconsideration of current laws and regulations regarding access to opioid medications for individuals suffering from chronic pain. The current guidelines, inspired by the 2016 recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have inadvertently led to undue suffering for millions of individuals with chronic pain conditions. We recognize the severity of the opioid crisis and the need for responsible prescribing practices; however, we believe that blanket restrictions on opioid prescriptions have resulted in unintended consequences, leaving many patients without access to necessary pain relief.

Many individuals with chronic pain have faced immense challenges in accessing opioid medications due to the stigma and fear surrounding their use. Despite trying various non-opioid treatments, they have found that nothing provides the same level of relief as opioids. It is unjust that patients with chronic pain are denied access to medications that could significantly improve their quality of life.

Furthermore, we have seen an alarming trend where individuals in need of pain medications have resorted to obtaining them through illicit means, such as purchasing them from drug dealers on the streets. Also putting themselves at risk of ingesting the deadly drug Fentanyl to get some type of relief, this is noway to live life. This not only poses significant health risks to the individuals involved but also contributes to the perpetuation of criminal activities and drug-related violence in our communities.

The recent updates to the CDC guidelines are a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to ensure that patients with chronic pain have access to effective treatment options. We call for a comprehensive review of current laws and regulations, with a focus on preserving access to opioids for patients who truly need them while implementing safeguards to prevent misuse and diversion.

Additionally, we believe that healthcare providers should not have the unilateral authority to deny patients access to medications that could potentially alleviate their suffering. No patient should be told that they are "not experiencing pain" or be denied treatment based on unfounded assumptions.

We urge policymakers, healthcare professionals, and regulatory agencies to work together to find solutions that balance the need to address the opioid crisis with the imperative to provide compassionate care for individuals living with chronic pain. Every patient deserves access to safe and effective pain management options, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that they receive the care and support they need without the judgment.

Thank you for considering our petition.

Sincerely,
