Christopher Columbus Day recognized in South Carolina

The Issue

As a proud third-generation Italian American, my family history is deeply rooted in the dreams and aspirations that brought my Italian ancestors to the United States in the early 1900s. They arrived seeking a more sustainable and prosperous life, one where they could embrace opportunities and share their rich cultural heritage—through food, culture, architecture, religion, and most importantly, traditions—that have so significantly contributed to the American tapestry. My last name, Ferrone, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of people like my ancestors, who have helped construct the vibrant and diverse nation we call home.

In this spirit of recognition and heritage, we must uphold and celebrate the accomplishments of our ancestors by commemorating Christopher Columbus Day on October 13th in Lexington, SC. Columbus Day has traditionally been a celebration of Italian heritage, reflecting the exploration and ambition that drove Columbus to discover new lands. This commemoration acknowledges the vital contributions Italian Americans have made—and continue to make—to the United States.

Recently, the celebration has been overshadowed by the observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. While we respect and acknowledge the histories and contributions of Indigenous peoples, we must ensure that Italian American history and achievements remain celebrated. Eliminating Columbus Day in favor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day negates the historical significance of one of the pivotal figures in history for our community.

Recognizing both days is not a solution, as it diminishes the importance of Italian American heritage. We call for the abolition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day in favor of Columbus Day, providing a much-deserved tribute to Italian Americans and their legacy in South Carolina.

We urge the town of Lexington, SC, to take action by reinstating Columbus Day as an exclusive holiday on October 13th, reaffirming the recognition of Italian American contributions. Join us in preserving our cultural narrative and acknowledging the hard-earned presence of our community in the United States. Sign this petition to assert the importance of celebrating Italian American heritage and Columbus Day in Lexington, SC!

Let's stand together to keep the vibrant spirit of Italian Americans alive through meaningful recognition and celebration.
