Make major supermarkets state the sustainability level of Palm Oil on all packaging.

Make major supermarkets state the sustainability level of Palm Oil on all packaging.

The Issue

Bosnian forests are slowly being destroyed by fires, and this year (2015) has seen the largest amount of forest area destroyed since 2013. This is due to the excessive planting and draining caused by Palm Oil manufacturers. These companies are draining forest land, causing peat and soil to dry and become extremely flammable, and it's not just human lives at risk.

The endangered wild orangutan homes are being destroyed by these forest fires and it is only becoming worse. Some of the main contributors are large supermarket brands such as Morrisons, Aldi, Asda and Lidl. There are many huge branded products that use palm oil from unsustainable sources and it is destroying the habitat of thousands of species. Sumatra has the highest rate of deforestation out of any county and has already lost over HALF of it's rural forest area in the past few years.

This petition is to make the government aware of our big branded supermarket's impact on the ecosystem and ensure that all own brand products are labeled with a level of sustainability to make the public aware. this means that we as a country can make more informed and sustainable choices and hopefully heighten the need for a more eco friendly product.

The Leuser Ecosystem, a 2.6 million hectare expanse of forest spanning the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra, is one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. It was designated an UNESCO Tropical Rainforest Heritage Site in 2004, but has since been placed on a list of World Heritage in Danger due to the ongoing threats. The ecosystem incorporates the Gunung Leuser National Park, and is the last stronghold for the Sumatran orangutan. You can read about the latest threats to the ecosystem here. This petition is aimed at both Christine Tacon, the current groceries code adjudicator, and DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs)
