Eyecare IS Healthcare!

The Issue

Eye health is necessary, not a luxury.

The Ford government wants to STOP OHIP-provided eye exams. Who pays for OHIP? We do! Our taxes help fund OHIP. Yet the Ford government wants to further reduce the current 55% cost of eye exams so that optometrist clinics will end up passing the remainder of the cost to patients as out-of-pocket expenses.

It’s no secret that Premier Doug Ford loves and wants an American-style healthcare system of private insurance companies where healthcare is reliant on employers to voluntarily provide health insurance to employees and their dependents. This would leave out a majority of Ontarians who are employed as casual, temporary, indirect, or in zero-hours contracts.

If you are born with high prescription nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia) eyecare is a necessity. If your child begins having difficulty seeing the blackboard, it starts to affect their learning.

The Ford government does NOT want to give optometrists more funding to cover the operating costs of their businesses during a COVID-19 pandemic while we are most distracted!

They have left optometrists with no choice but to go on strike. If they do not prioritize eye care, as of September 1, 2021, access to eye care for millions of Ontarians will end.

Tell Premier Ford and your local MPP that not properly funding eye care hurts you and your family.

Eye Health is important to everyone’s future as citizens of Ontario, of being a human living in Canada, of being a human living in this world.
