Help stop systemic sexism in healthcare
The Issue
Sexism in healthcare is a systemic issue. Doctors have been trained how to treat your average 75kg white man, and their bodies have set the standard for how all bodies are believed to function. As a result women have often been actively excluded from clinical trials, even ones that are studying medicine unique to women, like uterine cancer, and has created an inherent gender bias in the practice of medicine. Sexism in healthcare is an issue that has only recently begun to gain traction with the increasing amount of women coming forward with how they've faced sexism within the healthcare system. Many women are ignored, especially by their male physicians, who too often only communicate with men as equals. Women are more prone to suffering from pain, and often have any abdominal pain passed off has menstrual cramps. The unfortunate reality is that people have biases, and medical doctors are people. So if you would like to help, you can sign this petition addressed to The Ontario Ministry of Health, and Health Minister Christine Elliott, to make it mandatory for all practicing physicians to receive bias training every three years, and everytime there is a complaint made against an individual physician, pertaining to gender or racial bias while practicing medicine.
