Hello my name is Tony Tyson, and I have been incarcerated since the age of sixteen.  I am an African American male from Seattle Washington.  And unfortunately life has not been easy for me.  I was raised by an abusive single father with a temper and a drug and alcohol addiction.  As a result of an unsafe living environment I sought refuge in the outside world.  Which lead me to engage in gang activity and indulge in alcohol and prescription pills.  I began to commit crimes and develop the belief that bad was good and good was undesirable.  Which in turn lead to the more than unfortunate circumstances that lead to the theft of life, my incarceration and the destruction of two families.  Since my incarceration I have had many ups and down and have suffered more deaths of family and close friends than I care to count.  In the mist of all this I discovered a light that guided me throughout my time.  It came in the form of a book.  While spending close to two years in the hole I read a book called the Souls of Black Folks by W.E.B Du Bois .  Reading This book changed my perspective and showed me a different way.  Since then I have struggled to become the best version of myself.  And it is in Honor of my journey from beginning til now that I would like to dedicating my life to being apart of change.  There are far to many in this country and around the world who fall victim to the traumas of life and are reacting to the negative nature of the environments that were forced upon them.  Unfortunately a poor reaction to negative circumstances such as these can lead to a lengthy prison sentence.  And in the case of many youth including myself this can mean spending more time incarcerated than you've been alive in the free world.  I want too both liberate myself and end the practice of sending children to prison.  Many steps have been taken to mitigate the effects of incarcerating children.  I argue that mitigation doesn't go far enough.  This practice needs to be abolished.  The harm involved in sending a child to prison impacts them there families and there communities.  This harm is far greater than giving children an opportunity to rehabilitate amongst there peers in children.  We can no longer allow the state to steal our children.  We need to save our kids.  Before the harm becomes to great and trauma impacted children become adults without hope.
