No Child Should Die From Cancer! More Screening at Contact Points with Children Needed.

The Issue

Thank you for your time. Please note that anyone can sign this petition, no matter where you might be in the world. We cannot do this on our own and we need all the help we can get. You can help by signing & sharing this petition.

The community is an interconnection of human beings so as humans we are all interconnected in one way or another. The Covid pandemic reminds us that we need these connections in order to be healthy and functional.

Children’s wards, at Ga-Rankuwa specifically, reflect the major diseases documented in national policies.
Childhood Cancer, however, is little heard of in our communities. It may be rarer than above mentioned diseases but tends to have very poor outcomes. And this can be avoided!

The problem we face in our public sector hospitals is generally of lack. And in our “township population” sometimes an ignorance and reluctance to access our services. This negatively affects outcomes compared to other populations that are well aware of cancer and have, for similar cases, better outcomes.
Specific to this environment, we wish to point out what cancer is, what it takes to treat it, how it affects younger groups as opposed to only “old people”, or just “non-Africans”.

A lack of awareness that cancer occurs in African people, specifically in children and young people is leading to delayed presentation to experts, delayed acceptance of treatment offered, delays in returning for treatment, more traditional perceptions and practices that delay management, and an overwhelming reluctance to visit our facilities when necessary. With the current focus on Covid-19, this response is worse.

We have a unique opportunity to highlight Childhood Cancer during September which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This is important because almost all of the children that are finally admitted for treatment and care die. Through education and public awareness we hope to achieve our awareness goal.

You can be an advocate by simply knowing the EARLY WARNING SIGNS: Acronym SILUAN.

During 2021-2022, we will host several activities to support the Paediatric Oncology Unit at Dr George Mkhari Academic Hospital, Garankuwa, Pretoria.
And we need your support!
