Child safety first! Play areas should be safe for kids with out the risk of being run over
The Issue
Last week, I was unfortunate to witness a young child running across a park next to a children's play area, adjacent to a road, who then, due to no safety fence ran into the road and was struck by a passing vehicle. If this park was like the others in the area and had a small fence on the parks edge, this would not have happened. The petition below is to encourage Southampton City Council to install a protective fence to prevent this ever happening again. The park is used by family's every day. It's only a matter of time until his happens again causing a possible fatality. I never want to see what I saw again. ever!
Please take a moment to sign the petition to get a safety fence installed to protect our children!
Petition to Southampton City Council for the Installation of a Safety Fence between Houndwell Park and Palmerston Road
To: Southampton City Council Civic Centre, Southampton, SO14 7LY
Purpose of Petition:
We, the undersigned residents and nembers of the Southampton community, formally request that Southampton City Council install a secure safety fence between Houndwell park and Palmerston Road.
This petition follows a serious and distressing incident in which I personally witnessed a child being struck by a vehicle near the edge of the park.
This event highlighted a clear and urgent safety risk. The park is regularly used by families, young children, and local residents, and its close proximity to the road creates a dangerous situation where children may inadvertently run or wander into traffic.
Reasons for Request:
•Protective Boundary - A fence would create a clear physical barrier between the park and Palmerston Road
• Accident Prevention -
Reducing the likelihood of future incidents involving children and vehicles
• Public Reassurance -
Providing peace of mind for parents, carers, and all park users. . Community Wellbeing - Ensuring the park remains a safe, family-friendly environment for everyone.
Action Requested:
We respectfully ask Southampton City Council to:
1. Review the current safety conditions of the park along Palmerston Road.
2. Approve the installation of a suitable safety fence around the park boundary.
3. Prioritise this work to prevent further accidents and protect local children and families.
