Stop the impending cutting of 2729 trees in Agra for metro rail construction.
The Issue
According to recent reports, the proposed metro rail construction in Agra requires felling of 2729 trees in Agra. The stretch proposed to connect Sikandra to Taj Mahal East gate has dense forest cover on both ends with proposed metro station at Sikandra only 1.5 km away from the Babarpur Reserve Forest and Taj Mahal East Gate station close to PAC ground merely 505 metres away from Taj Mahal. While the trees are being planned to cut at the Babarpur Reserve, a whopping 1226 trees are proposed to cut at the PAC ground. The most trees are to be cut near Taj Mahal even though the Supreme Court has banned felling of trees in the Taj Trapezium Zone. All these details have been mentioned in the Detailed Project Report of the metro project as per the report in leading Hindi Daily Amar Ujala. In recent years Agra has witnessed large scale deforestation in an around the city. The city is 16th most polluted in the world and 13th most polluted in the country as per the 2018 Air Visual report and more felling of trees will mean worsening of this situation as it has been highlighted in AP pollution control board reports from Hyderabad that the metro construction projects in the city has been accompanied by massive increase in pollution levels.
