Enforce ban on polythene bags, replace with paper, biodegradable bags

Enforce ban on polythene bags, replace with paper, biodegradable bags

The Issue

Polythene bags are one of the biggest sources of pollution in the world. A big economy like India needs to away with them. But due to close collaboration of big plastic maker corporates with politicians there is hardly any action.

Only the state of Himachal Pradesh has gone ahead and banned polythene and unnecessary plastic coverings and has comprehensive enforcement. (http://www.ndtv.com/india-news/himachal-pradesh-court-bans-polythene-packed-chips-candy-545888).

Though Delhi (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/india/9698450/Delhi-bans-all-plastic-bags-as-rubbish-mountains-build.html)  and Uttarakhand (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/dehradun/Ban-on-plastic-bags-goes-down-the-drain/articleshow/47846202.cms ) have banned it, though due to corrupt officials and lack of initiative of state govt, it is not being enforced. (http://www.newindianexpress.com/thesundaystandard/Paralysis-by-Plastic-Plagues-Delhis-Ecosystem/2015/05/24/article2829695.ece)

Even Pondicherry is experimenting with biodegradable bags (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/puducherry/Green-substitute-for-plastic-carry-bags-to-hit-Puducherry-market/articleshow/49267989.cms).

It is urged that since AAP govt came with the big promise of cleaning up politics and the environment, this would set an example for others to follow if implemented in Delhi. In turn, it would provide huge employment opportunities for smaller and poorer sectors as paper bags are relatively easy to make even at home unlike polythene.

All eyes on Chief Minister Kejriwal, how can Delhi not lead the way!
