Remove Bernhardt Esau Street Name (Swakopmund)

The Issue

The community of Swakopmund wanted/still wants to be consulted with the fishrot National scandal. We, the community would like to have a say on this matter since the Government is not going to issue a commission of inquiry and simply leaving this to cabinet resolutions. Us, as a community needs to take steps to show that we are both aggrieved and demonstrate this by wanting this change we see fit and all the attempts by the state have not inspired confidence in terms of the next steps. We are not talking about the legal course of action underway.

The municipality of Swakopmund through the council has decided to provide a street within Swakopmund. Named, Bernhardt Esau in 2018.

I am of the opinion that this should change.

Bernhardt Esau street needs to be removed. His name is a shame to the town of Swakopmund and the Erongo region. His key role in fishrot and the severe impact on people's lives in Walvis Bay. We would like to show solidarity with the workers in this struggle and impact by the retrenchments that are felt until today.

While the Nation is under the COVID Coma, we want to get things right and demonstrate the will of the people and show solidarity by removing the former minister's name.

I am not sure what legacy we are leaving by having that street name...

We have other common heroes that have worked hard / make an honest living that can replace him;

Deon Hotto as an example!

Swakopmund is "moeg" of GREED and CORRUPTION.

We rely on the support of the councilors to raise this motion and do the right thing. His image and name are tarnished and we should reflect this on the ground too.

Those councilors that protect the status quo will be named and shamed.

We trust that councilors will see the light and make the needed changes. We will be coming for other street names too.

So Swakopmund reflects the whole nation and not just some and the past...

We have the energy and the time!
