Review and Drop case # 12-002541 against Joel Kerr.
Review and Drop case # 12-002541 against Joel Kerr.
The Issue
Basically, a white man impersonating a police officer assaulted a black teen on the kid’s own property, and the police arrested the black teen.
The black teen happens to be my youngest brother-in-law, Joel Kerr. Joel is 17 years old, and was adopted by Bobbie Kerr and family as a teeny tiny baby boy- I believe he was 3 or 4 days old, along with 11 other special needs children. Bobbie and her late husband had 5 children of their own, making Joel the youngest of 17. Joel is as angsty as any other 17 year old, however his special needs have left him with low impulse control, and cerebral palsy. The cp requires Joel to have multiple botox injections to his calves that allow him to walk, because his bone growth continued to outpace his muscle growth. He is also the size of a sumo wrestler. People are intimidated by his size and assumptions and stereotypes abound.
In the apartment complex where Joel and Bobbie live is a white man who works at the county jail. He is also a self-appointed watchman who refers to himself as "police officer." This white man does not like the large black teen, and has been on the lookout for any steps outside the box. Not hard for a 17 year old. Harassment for Joel and the family follow.
Sunday, April 1, 2012, Joel witnessed a homophobic assault on a kid in apartment complex and broke it up. Joel was taking the kid inside for safety and to be cleaned up by Bobbie when the white man interfered, assuming the black kid was once again up to no good. Joel cussed at him, went inside. The white man started yelling at him through the bedroom window. Joel went back outside to tell him to leave, and the white man pinned him to the ground with his knee. When Bobbie came outside, the man claimed he was a police officer and asked to her to call 911 as if there was no way this white lady could be this black boys mother.
Bobbie called the police. They showed up and arrested Joel—for assault. Welcome to the good old boy network in Texas.
Joel was also taken by the McKinney Police Department at 8 years old to the Terrell State Adult Mental Hospital to scream in a soundproof cell, doped with Thorazine, because he had drawn a stick figure with a gun in a box labeled "Bad Choices."
In McKinney, Texas, black men are scary even at age 8.
