"Un-retire" Bobby Hull's jersey

The Issue

Bobby Hull played for 15 seasons as a Chicago Blackhawk and had his jersey retired in 1983. We the undersigned believe that his racist and abusive behaviour 'off the ice' means he should forfeit his jersey retirement.

This is not an attempt to erase history or change the past. Far from it, we want the Chicago Blackhawks to acknowledge that Bobby Hull has not represented the Chicago Blackhawks or Hockey in the appropriate way by "un-retiring" his number.

Bobby Hull commited horrendous acts of domestic abuse and condoned/supported racist views. Despite this he is used as a PR focal point for an organisation, in 2017 dropping the puck at the Winter Classic. At no time was this behaviour acceptable and at no time has the Blackhawks spoken out nor condemned his behaviour. At a time when the world is looking in the mirror and asking serious questions it is essential that the Blackhawks do not condone these actions by remaining silent on the topic.

We accept that people do change and that they can be forgiven however, in 2010 when asked if he had any regrets about his behaviour in he replied:

“Same guy. Same guy with the same attitude toward life. You only pass this way one time, and if you don’t have fun, you’ll go to the grave, and you’ll have missed a lot. I think I’ve mellowed a lot, as far as that’s concerned. Where I think that my wife is a better wife now than when we got married, and that was 28 years ago.”
