Chewy.com: No more Plastic Tape on your shipments! Start using Kraft Paper Tape, instead!
The Issue
Chewy.com boasts about reducing its 'carbon pawprint' on all of its packages.
Yet Chewy.com uses plastic tape on all of its shipments.
1) Plastic tape does not biodegrade. Microplastic pollution is a threat to all life on Earth.
2) Plastic tape is made from fossil fuels. Climate change is a threat to all life on Earth.
3) Plastic tape is a choking and tangling hazard for pets. Chewy.com’s Plastic tape easily peels off of their boxes because the tape is only pressure-bonded, not chemically-bonded. If consumed by a pet, plastic tape can cause choking, GI obstruction and even death.
4) Plastic tape discourages recycling of the Chewy.com cardboard box.
Many online retailers, including Amazon.com, have abandoned plastic tape in favor of water-activated Kraft paper tape. Chewy.com needs to follow suit!
Some Kraft paper tapes are reinforced with fiberglass threads - these should be avoided because of similar choking and environmental concerns. But it's also not needed: the bond from a water-activated (chemically-bonded) Kraft tape is far stronger than the bond from the pressure-bonded Plastic tape currently in use by Chewy.com.

Sumit Singh (Chewy.com CEO), Susan Helfrick (Chewy.com General Counsel), Mario Marte (Chewy.com CFO):
Please make this simple switch away from Plastic tape to a Kraft paper tape for all packages shipped by Chewy.com.
Your scale should make this possible at a negligible increase in cost, and will benefit your customers and society at large, benefits which Chewy.com can rightfully promote in advertising and packaging. You might even brand the Paper tape, and boast about it being eco-friendly and pet-safe on the tape itself.
Sincerely,
the undersigned
