Save the Dean Row Greenbelt

The Issue

This is a petition which aims to express the importance of conserving the greenbelt in the Wilmslow region of Cheshire. It is vital not only for its ecological benefits but for the access to green space of the surrounding residents contributing to their well-being and quality of life - something which concrete-paved residential estates fail to achieve. Much of the soil in the area consists of heavy clay - some of the area acting as local wetland and the other as meadow land. Habitat fragmentation, destruction and biodiversity decline are just some of the negative consequences of these apparent positive developments.

There are many opportunities to re-develop brownfield (land which has previously been built on.) land for new housing as an alternative. Wilmslow has already lost much of its 'safeguarded' land at the beginning of this year to the new housing development 'Bollin Park' on Adlington Road. To re-classify the little remaining areas of greenbelt as now 'safeguarded' land only to be built on in the near future is unacceptable.

There are many historic buildings in the area (e.g. Dean Row Chapel) and traditional dwellings full of character. The proposed scheme is insensitive to the existing context and the roads simply aren't designed to accommodate another major housing development. Why is this area being targeted so drastically when there are numerous derelict sites in nearby Stockport and Manchester awaiting re-development?

Heathfield Farm (Dean Row) proposals: http://cheshireeast-consult.limehouse.co.uk/file/2928536

It is also worth mentioning that the new housing development currently under construction on adjacent Adlington Road (in which the Dean Row greenbelt development would be a continuation of) isn't affordable - the vast majority of them ranging from £750 000 - £900 000
