According to Virginiatransportation.org 3.5 million vehicles travel across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT) yearly. The guardrails on this bridge are useless! They aren't protecting anything, not cars and especially not tractor trailers. The gusts of wind on the bridge affect motorist more because there's no protection from buildings or trees like on normal roads. On June 22nd 2023, a tractor trailer grazed the curb and had blown a tire and proceeded to go off the side of the bridge. That same day around the time of the incident his wife went into labor with his third kid. He was never able to meet his son. The bridge is more worried about being able to see the water than a proper safe guardrail. The bridge needs safer guardrails! The speed limit of the bridge is 55 mph. Look at the pictures and think if you and your family trust that guardrail going 55 mph. This is an 18 mile long bridge and that means lots of opportunity for incident. Chris's life couldn't be saved but the next one could.
