In July 2020, Monmouthshire County Council closed Chepstow High Street as one of a number of trial measures to ensure shoppers could safely visit the town’s businesses and amenities during the coronavirus pandemic.

This closure, from the medieval arch at the top, to Beaufort Square at the bottom was implemented for a temporary initial period of 18 months.

Opinions on the changes are clearly wide ranging, but it is also clear that many people do not feel like their voices have been heard by Monmouthshire County Council in their decision making.

Concerns over a lack of consultation have been reported from Chepstow Town Council, Chepstow Society and Chepstow Chamber of Commerce as well as by many residents and local business owners through the media and social media channels and groups.

Therefore…….

We the undersigned call upon Monmouthshire County Council to hold a public meeting in Chepstow, by the end of March, to explain the reasons for the closure of the High Street, Chepstow and to listen and respond to the views of residents, businesses, and visitors before making any long term decisions about the road layout in Chepstow
