Save Cheltenham’s Spa Status

Save Cheltenham’s Spa Status

The Issue

Bacteria found at the historic Pittville Pump Room may result in the loss of the town's 300-year-old spa status.

Cheltenham holds a prestigious title as one of the UK's most prominent spa towns. However, recent concerns have arisen regarding the preservation of this invaluable heritage.

At a borough council meeting in June 2023, the councillor responsible for such matters declared that bacteria found at Pittville Pump Room, one of the town's sources of mineral water, may result in the loss of Cheltenham's 300-year-old spa status. This drew attention from opposition councillors, the BBC, ITV, LBC, The Times and the local Gloucestershire Live.

We call upon Cheltenham Borough Council to ensure that the member responsible for economic development, culture, tourism and wellbeing, who raised the potential loss, takes all necessary actions to return a safe and clean supply of mineral water at the Pump Room to safeguard our town's spa status.

Our spa status is not only a source of civic pride for residents but also an essential aspect of our local economy. It attracts tourists from far and wide, contributing significantly to our community's prosperity. Investing in the preservation of our centuries-old status will boost our local economy, create employment opportunities and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
