Check Out Smithsonian's "Women in Science"

The Issue

Briar Levit wrote a brief article in Bitch Magazine on March 19 about the Smithsonian Institution's Women in Science photo gallery on Flickr.

"The Smithsonian is relatively new to Flickr, with only 15 sets of photos—but each one is a treasure trove of American history/science/culture. They cover everything from astronomy to industrial design to American history."

The Smithsonian writes on Flickr:
"In honor of International Women's Day 2009 and Women's History Month, the Smithsonian Institution Archives (SIA) is pleased to present a sampling of images documenting women scientists and engineers from around the world, most of whom were pioneers in their respective fields, or were the first women to receive advanced graduate degrees in their discipline.

Throughout March 2009, SIA will post groups of photographs showing women scientists and engineers at work; women trained in science and engineering who worked outside the laboratory as librarians, writers, political activists, or in other areas where their work informed or was informed by science; family research collaborators who assisted their scientist husbands and fathers; and several images for which we have little descriptive information to which we invite you to contribute!"

Please check out this beautiful photo gallery of intelligent, innovative women in science and forward it to friends, family, co-workers, and particularly women in male-dominated fields who may need some encouragement.

D WPetition StarterThere is still very limited awareness of the nature of the threat. This is an era of specialists, each of whom sees his own problem and is unaware of or intolerant of the larger frame into which it fits. It is also an era dominated by industry, in which the right to make a dollar at whatever cost is seldom challenged. When the public protests, confused with some obvious evidence...it is fed little tranquilizing pills of half-truths. We urgently need an end to these false assurances, to the sugar coating of unpalatable facts. It is the public that is being asked to assume the risks...The public must decide whether it wishes to continue on the present road, and it can do so only when in full possession of the facts.
