Greater transparency on labels regarding animal testing

The Issue

When I was ten years old I discovered a website that listed all the brands that test on animals. Several weeks later I wrote a letter to the brand Aussie, a haircare brand, (that I was using at the time) and asked why they needed to test on animals when they need not do so due to the many alternatives available. I received a reply fairly efficiently, that they wanted to move away from animal testing but continue to do so as they believed they had not found a completely suitable alternative. I felt beyond dismayed and disappointed with the brand and decided I would no longer buy their products or contribute to such unnecessary cruelty.

Fast forward to today, its 2020 and these large companies are still testing on animals, but without the decency or transparency of doing so. They don’t want to admit they do it, why would they, they would lose customers and credibility. Imagine a label that states; WE TEST OUR PRODUCTS ON ANIMALS, imagine that level of truth, that level of honesty and transparency. Well that is exactly what I want to see, I want to see the truth, because its a whole sight better knowing the truth then hiding, masking and conflicting unimaginable cruelty.

Giant Companies such as L’Oreal, Johnson & Johnson and Proctor & Gamble, as well as many more, ALL test on animals, and they each own stakes in many hundreds of brands.

If they where required by trading standards to state that their products (or the ingredients within the products) are tested on animals on their labels, people would be immediately made clear on the true impact of the product and transfers real power from the large companies to the consumers, it lets the consumer know the ethos (of lack of) of the company. If a company is happy to test their products on animals then why aren’t they happy to show this on their product label? Its simply because they know this will harm peoples perception of the product, people will be less likely to want to buy a product that states its tested on animals. Knowledge is power after all. It is currently not a legal requirement to state that a product is tested on animals, so being unclear about whether a product is or is not tested on animals is easily done.

Greater transparency would: Give the consumer immediate clear information regarding if the product was tested on animals, help people to make people better choices, enable people to make choices with the real information right in front of them, because allowing companies to hide animal testing is hiding the truth.

Its 2020 - lets create animal testing transparency and help make it a thing of the past, together we can change the future for animals
