Elliott Harding started this petition to Charlottesville City Council

Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) is joining a list of dozens of other local law enforcement agencies throughout Virginia by partnering with Amazon's "Ring" doorbell technology and its Neighbors app to "equip the department with an emerging tool to enhance its investigations work." This comes as a legitimate threat of growing privacy concerns in our Commonwealth and throughout the nation and we need to preemptively ensure that Charlottesville City does not enact similar policies.

Doorbell technology may seem innocuous, but the video footage is stored by these large data organizations and can ultimately result in hacking, the recording of otherwise innocent activity, and is one step closer to having a camera on every street corner and doorstep (literally). By signing this petition, you're telling the Charlottesville City Council that you'd like an ordinance or similar codification of a policy that bars this sort of public-private merger by law enforcement.

It is one thing to request footage from the victim of a crime, it's wholly different to have a standing data-share policy between our law enforcement agents and a publicly traded organization that uses and stores data at the expense of the unwitting public. Though it may seem innocuous, every civil liberty is one step closer to being eliminated in the name of security. This is a PRIME example (pun intended)
